Adapt is the leading open source e-learning tool, licenced under the GNU GPL licence 3.0. It's supported and maintained by the Adapt Learning organisation.
It's comprised of two products:
- The Adapt Framework, the output files to be hosted on your Learning Management System (LMS).
- The Adapt Authoring Tool, which is the visual editing software that you use through your web browser.
Adapt Unlimited is a Software as a Service (SaaS) offering of the Adapt Authoring Tool. We deal with all the complexities of hosting server-based software and in return charge an on-going fee. We host your Adapt service on it's own private server resulting in the fastest build times and the ability to install plugins created by the wider Adapt community.
Adapt Unlimited is one of the only Authoring Tool providers that charges per team, rather than per author. We believe that you shouldn't be punished for scaling up your e-learning team and we want our offering to be economical for both small and large teams. If you have a team of more than 20 authors you will be asked to move onto an Enterprise plan.
Standard offers purely Adapt hosting and leaves the training and support of your team to you. With the Pro tier you will get unlimited phone, email and video call support from Adapt Unlimited, as well as 6 hours of workshops per year. About 60% of our customers choose Pro.
Our Enterprise offering is for teams of more than 20 authors or teams that have a special requirement for their hosting. E.g hosting in a paticular region, or some custom development on their authoring tool. Please email us to arrange a quote for an Enterprise service.

Every customer's service is run on a private server hosted on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP), one of the most secure cloud computing environments in the world.
We give you control over account creation and maintenance, so you can create and manage accounts for staff.
We also run daily backups of all your courses so that in case there is any issues we can revert you back to the previous day.
If you’re using open source Adapt we can help you import all of your courses.
If you are running an older version of Adapt (e.g. version 2), then we can install version 2 on your server so all your courses will be visible.
If you're using a hosted version of Adapt, you should ask your provider what export options they provide.

The Adapt Authoring Tool consistently recieves numerous updates that makes it increasingly user friendly out-of-the-box. We think that both technical and non-technical users can create beautiful courses using the tool without any further custom modifications.
The Adapt Authoring Tool has come a long way to make it more useable for the average e-learning team. It's had four major releases bringing some great new features, such as in-browser theme editor and better usability.
Whilst having a developer on your team who knows basic CSS will help, it's by no means a necessity.
